SURVIVING JANUARY ON A BUDGET

I'm sure we can all agree that we feel the pinch on our purse strings when January swings by. Christmas is such a costly time of year and unfortunately the left over turkey doesn't see us through to the start of February.  I love January for so many things, but I do worry about how we will get through it, with finances at an all time low and so many days to go until pay day, it can be a real struggle.  This month we're going super savvy and living on a tight budget.  Here's my suggestions on how you too can survive January.

Meal Planning
If there was ever a good time to meal plan then now would be it!  This month we won't be treating ourselves to steak and chips and there will be no M&S luxury items slipping into our basket, instead we'll be going lean on the old food shop front, buying only what we need.  Just because we are cutting out a few luxury items doesn't mean we can't eat well.  Write out your weekly meals, make a list and stick to it.  Shopping in Aldi or Lidl will cut your bill down greatly, and if you want to be super savvy you could always do your food shop in the evening, supermarkets usually discount anything going out of date, snap this up, cook it off or freeze it and save yourself a packet!

Staying in is the new going out!
Whilst this is practically the story of my life these days, I do still enjoy the odd date night, lunch with friends or coffee with my mum, however all of these are being sidelined this month and instead our free days and weekends will be spent at home, huddled on the sofa in our new jammies and binge watching box sets. We're going to focus on blackout again this month (you can read about that here), and enjoy some time just the two of us! (Oscar will be bedded by 7pm).

Keeping the kids amused
There's no reason for the kids to be bored after the mountain of toys they'll have received over Christmas, but their kids and staying indoors probably won't satisfy them all of the time, so this month get outdoors, go for walks, visit your local parks, fresh air is always good, it helps tire the kids out too (winning at life right there) and it also gets everyone together.  It might be cold but wrap up warm and enjoy the crisp clean air!

Sell it!
With Christmas over you probably have quite a few things you no longer need. De-clutter is not only good for the mind but it can also help recoup some of those Christmas costs.  See what you can sell and stick it up on Gumtree, Ebay or even Facebook.  Even if you only get a few pounds here and there it all adds up and as they say every penny counts.

Cut down on your bills
Since we don't have the money to be living it up, now is a great time to review our bills, subscriptions and all the other extra's we pay for monthly that we probably don't need.  I'll definitely be taking this time to look into our Sky bill, my car insurance provider and other subscriptions that I can cancel in order to help save extra money, not for this month but for the rest of the year.

I hope you've found some of these suggestions helpful, what are you doing to be money savvy in January? Please share you tips, if there is anything else I can do to maximise our savings I'm all ears.

  2. January is always a tight month... We're spending as little as possible too - going through our cupboards to use up the Christmas leftovers and spending time playing games at home rather than heading out to soft play! I'm looking forward to sorting through things and selling some items on eBay and Facebook. I always seem to be cramming things into cupboards instead of clearing out! x #weekendblogshare

  3. I'm really having to start being frugal this year. I do really well then I end up having a huge splurge when I'm having a bad day. I always think the meal planning would be a good idea, but somehow it doesn't happen #weekendblogshare
